  4. Capital Controls come to Italy

    The passing of an extraordinary edict making cash transactions of more than Euro 1,000 illegal (not subject to reporting – just plain illegal). Following Prodi’s own desire, the existing regime has indicated that this level will be progressively reduced to a limit as low as Euro 300. Hence cash is maybe for the first time in history no longer legal tender (over Euro 1,000, for now);

    A requirement that credit card companies report all transactions carried out by Italians, in Italy and abroad to the fiscal authorities;

    Delays and refusals by banks in allowing customers to withdraw cash balances of as little as Euro 10,000;

    Finance Police has placed cameras at the physical borders with Switzerland (see below) to register all license plates. In addition, currency-sniffing dogs have been deployed at the border

    Tanzanian police foil $30m 'Great Plane Robbery' gold heist
    Tanzanian police have foiled a $30.6m (£19.8m) bullion robbery, which would have rivalled the £25m Brinks Mat gold heist from Heathrow in 1983 if it had succeeded.

  7. GOP debate: Ron Paul goes on the attack, steps back into the spotlight

    Gingrich was also critical of Paul. When asked about Paul calling him a "chickenhawk" because he didn't serve in the military, the former speaker said: "Dr. Paul makes a lot of comments. It's part of his style."

    Paul wouldn't back down. "I think people who don't serve when they could and they get three or four or even five deferments, they have no right to send our kids off to war," he said. "I'm trying to stop the wars, but

    at least, you know, I went when they called me up."

    Gingrich looked angry and said he resented Paul's remarks.

  10. New Jersey Will Pay You $1000 To Destroy The 2nd Amendment

    The 2nd Amendment is not a negotiable or debatable pillar of the Constitution. It is absolute in its protection. Every American, regardless of the temporary circumstances of the times, is free to arm and defend himself from ANY enemy, from average criminals, to government thugs. The gun confiscation program featured in the video below, and instituted by officials in New Jersey, should not be taken lightly. The pure idiocy inherent in its premise cannot be ignored. New Jersey’s willingness to pay off potential informants could very well be a petri dish test for much more expansive programs across the country in the future. If we cannot stop the corruption and anti-constitutionalism of a pathetic state like New Jersey, then how can we expect to disrupt the same brand of corruption throughout the U.S.?

  15. (Noteworthy non-technical observations come through: 1) David Rosenberg noted that Central Banks bought a record 148.3 tonnes of Gold in Q3 with more in 2011 than any other year since the Bretton Woods system collapsed four decades ago; 2) Paul Brodsky notes that as the Gold futures have come down, the stocks of physical Gold with dealers have depleted at a significantly faster pace; and 3) As to the concern of Gold having experienced a bubble this year, Ian McAvity lends a wonderful statistical perspective: “At $1,900 Gold recently, it was 2.2x its early 1980 peak. US GDP & US Federal Debt are about 5.5x their early 1980 levels, while the S&P 500 and Total Credit Market Debt are at 11 ½ -to-12 times their early 1980 levels. The real bubble has been the issuance of debt that is increasingly stifling any real recovery in the Main Street economy.”)

    Mr. Corzine Is Seeking Some Space

    Jon S. Corzine, who resigned as chief executive of MF Global Holdings Ltd. shortly after the securities firm collapsed in October, recently has been looking for office space in Manhattan, according to people familiar with the situation.

    One of the locations he seems interested in: brokerage firm John Carris Investments, at 40 Wall St., around the corner from the New York Stock Exchange, these people said. Employees at the small firm have been told that the former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. chairman and New Jersey governor might drop ...

    DECLARING WAR ON CANCER

    Army researchers develop vaccine that could cut recurrence rates
    Peoples said testing the drug on healthy women at risk for breast cancer could take decades to show results, so his team did the next-best thing. They tested healthy survivors who have beaten breast cancer but still run a risk of the disease recurring.

    For women in a control group given no treatment, the rate of cancer recurrence was 20 percent, Peoples said. Among patients given the new drug, he said, “we cut that rate in half.”

    That success rate matches that of a widely prescribed cancer drug called Herceptin, Peoples said, but while Herceptin only works for about 20 percent of patients, E-75 worked for 60 percent.

    “It’s a big deal,” Peoples said. “However, nothing’s a done deal until it’s proven in phase three” — large-scale clinical trials.

    The Army has partnered with a company called Galena Biopharma on the third phase of clinical testing, which begins early this year.
