IRS Director of Tax-Exempt Organizations: "Like, Sorry Dude"

Thank you.  I'm not good at math
- Lois Lerner, IRS Director of Tax-Exempt Organizations  LINK

Hmmm.  Sorry?  I'm not good at math.  It would seem that at least one of the qualifications for working at the IRS in a managerial position would be simple math skills.  Her comment was in response to an inquiry that included a basic 5th grade math calculation.

I know knee-jerk liberal Democrats are saying "serves the bastards right."  But then what do these same people say when the Government illegally raids the private information of the media - the same media that has protected and defended Obama?  Look people, the fact that Bush essentially lifted his leg on the Bill of Rights and let the Government trample all over our rights was bad enough.  But wasn't the guy that's in there now supposed fix all the damage Bush inflicted on our Constitution and Civil Rights?  I know he made those promises because I watched one of his speeches in person in 2008 in which he promised to clean up Capitol Hill and Wall Street.  How's his scorecard there?

Not only has Obama NOT even attempted to fix things, he's taken the baton handed to him by Bush and run laps around the crimes committed by the Bush Administration.  How can any person who voted for Obama POSSIBLY defend this guy?  And it's beyond laughable that Eric Holder has recused himself from the AP scandal - his dirty fingerprints are all over it.  He should be held accountable in a court of law.  But then again, it appears as if Obama skipped the class that covered Rule of Law at Harvard  - that is, assuming Harvard Law even bothers to teach that subject matter...

From the liberally-oriented Huffington Post today:
Tuesday also saw James Goodale, who was the lawyer for the New York Times in the Pentagon Papers case, flatly say that Obama was worse than Nixon in his dealings with the press..."Obama has all these things that he's done to the press on national security matters that Nixon never did," Goodale told the New York Observer  LINK

The golden truth of the matter is that our Government has become excessively large and omnipotent.  No wonder the Government-directed public education system no longer teaches the history of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights - it would be too dangerous to the livelihood of politicians and Governmental lifers for kids these days to learn why Thomas Jefferson and  his colleagues expressly put in the mechanisms required to prevent the kind of Government we have now.   These days Jefferson might be subjected to oppressive tactics by the IRS and the Justice Department.  And if that didn't stop Jefferson, under the guise provided by the Bush-legislated - and Obama-strengthened - Detainee Bill, Jefferson could be arrested and detained without the right to a hearing in front of a judge to determine if the detainment was warranted.

Back in 2003, I was having a conversation with a colleague and we both agreed that eventually we were going to see things happen in this country with corruption and fraud and unchecked Government oppression that would "blow our minds."  What's happened during the Bush era was bad enough.  But the fact that guy who was supposed to rescue the system from all of the above has actually enabled the problems to get worse truly blows my mind.

  2. JPMorgan Sues Portugal-Owned Companies to Enforce Swaps

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) sued state-owned Portuguese companies running the Lisbon and Oporto metro rail services, as well as the country’s strategic oil reserves, to enforce derivative contracts worth at least 455 million euros ($587 million).

JPMorgan filed the lawsuits in London on April 26, the same day Portugal made a deal with other banks to reduce its 3 billion-euro exposure to derivatives entered into by state-owned firms. The government failed to reach an agreement with JPMorgan and Banco Santander SA’s Portuguese unit, and said it would sue to defend its interests.

“We were forced to take protective measures in the English courts” following the April announcement by Portugal, JPMorgan spokesman Brian Marchiony said in an e-mail. The New York-based bank remains open to negotiations and the contracts aren’t in default, he said.

Banks are turning to U.K. courts to resolve swaps disputes with local governments and state-owned companies that say they lost money on complex derivatives. (home court advantage?) More than half a dozen Italian municipalities are embroiled in legal disputes with investment banks in London.

Maria Luis Albuquerque, Portugal’s secretary of state for treasury and finance, described the country’s hedging contracts as “toxic” with “elevated risks,” when she announced the April deal. An official at Portugal’s finance ministry declined to comment.

    1. Elizabeth Warren to Obama Administration: Take the Banks to Court, Already!

On Tuesday, fierce consumer advocate and needler of banks Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) called out Wall Street regulators for their habit of giving tepid punishments to misbehaving banks, and asked the agencies to justify their policy of settling with the wrongdoers out of court.

Warren sent a letter to the Justice Department, as well as to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Reserve, asking them for evidence on how a settlement that doesn't require a bank to admit guilt would be better policy than taking the bad apple to trial. If regulators at least show that they are willing to play tough, she argued, it will help deter bad behavior and allow regulators to negotiate bigger fines in the event of a later settlement.

Warren's letter follows a similar request she made to another banking regulator, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), at a February Senate Banking Committee hearing. When agency officials couldn't answer Warren's question about the last time they took a financial institution to trial—some said it was unnecessary—she asked them to pony up any research it had on the trade-offs of settling versus going to trial. Last week, the OCC responded that it had no such research. So Warren decided to take the question to some of the other Wall Street regulators.

In recent years, major US financial institutions have been caught, among other things, cooking their books, committing fraud, financing terrorists, and laundering money, and many walked away with little more than a wrist-slap. Last year, for example, the Justice Department declined to prosecute HSBC for years of money-laundering violations, levying a fine instead. In March, Attorney General Eric Holder, speaking before the Senate Judiciary Committee, conceded that the size of the banks, at least in the view of the administration, warrants some degree of impunity—that some banks are "too big to jail."

  3. Off the topic. Dave, do you think the physical demand for gold and silver matters to the paper prices? The demand for physical is strong but that doesn't seem to do anything to the paper price...

  4. This latest scandal that the Justice Department in fact secretly collected two months of telephone records for reporters and editors at the Associated Press, illustrates that there is just no rule of law. Attorney General Eric Holder has to recuse himself because he is part of the act.

People forget, but Holder was in charge of WACO under Janet Reno. They could have simply waited and arrested the leader who went to town all the time. No, Holder wanted to arrest everyone associated with him and that resulted in the death of all those children. Now, he is demonstrating again that whatever he wants to do, they just do. The Constitution is worthless. It restrains nobody and to enforce any pretended right you have, well it will cost a fortune since lawyers suck every penny out of people who are desperate. So between the Justice Department ignoring all rights and lawyers demanding a kidney to bring a suit they know they will lose against the Feds anyway, there is nothing really left worth cherishing.

There is no “free press” anymore. In my own case, on April 24, 2000, the court illegally threw the press out. ONLY the Associated Press entered despite the sign on the door that said the courtroom was closed.

The latest targeting of the Associated Press seems to be largely because they do not yield or shut up as most of the other mainstream press seems to do. This is why real news is taking place on the internet and newspapers are in a slow death. This does not even take into consideration the Bloomberg Scandal where they are acting like the Department of Justice invading the privacy of their readers. The “mainstream” press will never be real again until (1) there is no income tax to be able to threaten reporters, and (2) they are free from corporate and government bias.

    1. Our elections are rigged because the people we end up deciding for President, Governor, Representative, and Senate are all hand-picked by those with power and a lot of money. I don't feel that either parties represent me in any way. Whether its Obama or Romney, neither serves the American People. It's just going to keep getting worse till it eventually braks completely down cause it's all out-of-control.

To me, the Democrats lean towards a Russian-style Communism. The Republicans lean more towards a China-style Communism. That's about sums up any differences I see.

The American Work Ethnic - where you work yourself to death to achieve your "dreams" - is part of the problem. Too many people are so self absorbed in their life - busy-busy-busy,go-go-go - that they don't have time to be bothered, let alone have time for their families. It's a communistic-style machine work ethic, not the protestant work ethic. I know people who work 4am to 11 pm every day. Some have several "propjects" outside work that keeps them deceived from what is happening and they are very "mary-poppins / walmart greeter" passive when you expose them to reality. They also accuse you of having a bad attitude and that you need to change it. That;s why I have hardly any friends.

Meanwhile, the younger generation is so wrapped up on the Internet that, when it collapse along with this phase of Globalization, the withdrawals will be painful.

    2. Reply to Michael Jackson: The entire problem is Americans have lost the ability to think critically. I also notice that common sense is not in abundance either. T.P.T.B. control the media both electronic and print and the sheeple just lap it it up like a kitten does cream. You don't think like your freinds because you have a higher level of consciousness. Good for you,too bad about you freinds.

I finally figured it out - unless it DIRECTLY affects a person, they don't get a damn. I knew that driver licenses were going to be changed and everyone would be in the FBI database 3 years earlier. No one gave a damn. When it took effect, everyone was shouting "WTF??!!". The elite did the "cyprus bailout" on a small island but broke the forbidden law of confiscating people's bank accounts and we all go "WOW!!!". But the rest of the world ignored it cause it didn't relate to them. It isn't ignorance, it's apathy. Then when it hits home, it's "WTF??!!" all over again.

  5. Everything is Rigged, Continued: European Commission Raids Oil Companies in Price-Fixing Probe

    By Matt Taibbi

In researching that piece, one of my sources talked specifically about Platts (and another, similar price assessment company), noting that they "do benchmarks for the entire oil market, the entire refined products market" and "you name it" – any of these benchmarks that rely on voluntary reporting could be manipulated.

It's not clear yet exactly what is alleged to have occurred, but Europeans have long complained that retail gas prices have not seemed to match wholesale prices. In fact, complaints that wholesale prices at gas stations were noticeably slow to fall when wholesale prices fell prompted the U.K.-based Office of Fair Trading last year to conduct a cursory inquiry into possible anti-competitive behavior in the fuel markets. Early this year, they announced that they hadn't found enough evidence to warrant a full-blown investigation. But complaints persisted.

The story is obviously hugely significant in its own right, just as the LIBOR story was. But both are even more unpleasant in conjunction with each other, and the other price-fixing scandals that have cropped up in the financial markets in the last year or two. We've had other price-fixing scandals involving gas in the U.K. and here in the U.S., just a few weeks ago, it came out that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) concluded that JPMorgan Chase used "manipulative schemes" to tinker with energy prices in Michigan and California.

  7. Dave, it's convenient for you to change the subject when the core subject of your blog isn't doing so well for you. I agree that civil liberties are being trampled and have been trampled since The Patriot Act was passed. I agree that Obama hasn't done enough to prosecute the crooks that led to the Iraq War and the financial crisis. But I have truly no idea if Obama had any operational knowledge of the idiocy going on at the IRS, or with the AP. To assume that he did is a kneejerk assumption. Kinda like when people like you assume manipulation and conspiracies when gold drops under $1,400/oz.

Speaking of that, what does your latest rant have to do with the price of gold, anyway?

By the way, I've been writing this blog for free since 2009. Probably about the time they released from special ed for the mentally challendged. If you don't like this blog or it's content, then move the fuck along. Until King Obama further decrees, you don't HAVE to read what I write.

Government, RBI Are Again Getting It All Wrong on Gold

      By Nidhi Nath Srinivas

      http://blogs.economictimes.indiatimes.com/something-fresh/entry/govt-rbi...

The Indian consumer -- that's us -- is currently Public Enemy No. 1. We are apparently responsible for leaving the nation's balance sheet in a shambles with our insatiable lust for gold.

If the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had their way, anyone spotted buying gold would be flayed. Luckily, we are still not that sort of country.

But both are doing everything possible to punish us. We can't wear our own jewellery above Rs 1 lakh on an overseas holiday. We can't buy coins easily. The paperwork at a jewellery store is designed to turn away everyone except the most determined. The higher customs duty intends to make gold prohibitively expensive.

  8. Start boycotting...

New App Lets You Boycott Koch Brothers, Monsanto And More By Scanning Your Shopping Cart

Pardo’s handiwork is available for download on iPhone or Android, making its debut in iTunes and Google GOOG +2.17% Play in early May. You can scan
the barcode on any product and the free app will trace its ownership all the way to its top corporate parent company, including conglomerates like Koch Industries.

Once you’ve scanned an item, Buycott will show you its corporate family tree on your phone screen. Scan a box of Splenda sweetener, for instance, and you’ll see its parent, McNeil Nutritionals, is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson JNJ +0.51%.

Even more impressively, you can join user-created campaigns to boycott business practices that violate your principles rather than single companies. One of these campaigns, Demand GMO Labeling, will scan your box of cereal and tell you if it was made by one of the 36 corporations that donated more than $150,000 to oppose the mandatory labeling of genetically modified food.

Deciding to add that campaign to your Buycott app might make buying your breakfast nearly impossible, as that list includes not just headline grabbers like agricultural giant Monsanto but just about every big consumer company with a presence in the supermarket aisle: Coca-Cola, Nestle, Kraft, Heinz, Kellogg’s, Unilever and more.

Buycott is still working on adding new data to its back end and fine-tuning its information on corporate ownership structures. Most companies in the current database actually own more brands than Buycott has on record. The developers are asking shoppers to help improve their technology by inputting names of products they scan that the app doesn’t already recognize.

  9. MUST WATCH: Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist Chris Hedges: “Our Society is Being Reconfigured into a Totalitarian Security and Surveillance State.”

The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges joins us to discuss what could mark the most significant government intrusion on freedom of the press in decades. The Justice Department has acknowledged seizing the work, home and cellphone records used by almost 100 reporters and editors at the Associated Press. The phones targeted included the general AP office numbers in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Hartford, Connecticut, and the main number for the AP in the House of Representatives press gallery.
Hedges, a senior fellow at The Nation Institute and former New York Times reporter, calls the monitoring “one more assault in a long series of assault against freedom of information and freedom of the press.” Highlighting the Obama administration’s targeting of government whistleblowers, Hedges adds: “Talk to any investigative journalist who must investigate the government, and they will tell you that there is a deep freeze. People are terrified of speaking, because they’re terrified of going to jail.“

  10. Hey Dave:

Problem is soooo many politically oriented morons out there - pick a party, any party -
are myopically attached to their political agenda. Blue vs. Red - Yea team! Demonize the other
party! It is US vs THEM. When in reality it is all smoke blown up everyones asses, even when "They"
admit the big government got caught and abused power.... facts don't matter...No worries, "They" won't do it again.

See John Stewart's Daily Show rant here - http://tinyurl.com/bay49k8

Seems Mr. Stewart finally woke up to the reality that it doesn't matter your political bent, If the government wants to trample your 1st , 2nd & 4th Amendment Rights as a US citizen, along with ignoring the constitutional Bill of Rights, they will, with impunity ! It is just paper, just like our currency. Nothing to see here people, move along,

Unbelievably hard to believe that Obama can make Bush's crimes look good, but every day, he runs rings around Bush's criminality.

Maybe Biden should go grouse hunting and wound a lawyer, take the heat off of the Demo's in DC. After all
Biden is an expert in the use of shotguns.

Probably won't be that funny when one of the government alphabet agencies targets The Daily Show and demands The Daily Show support their agenda...or else. What? This just in to the Situation Room.......The Daily Show is already in Spin Control covering for the Prophet Obama.

Damn! I thought the hopium glazed sheeple were starting to see the light. Apparently not, we will have to wait to get Cyprussed before the pundits will come out and say "they never saw it coming."

    Tin foil indeed!
